Unequalled Opportunity For Students
Every year for the last fourteen years, internationally known scientists and leaders within their respective fields of scientific discovery come to Beloit to receive the Roy Chapman Andrews Society’s Distinguished Explorer Award. As part of a broader series of public presentations included each year is a presentation for area students.
This last weekend Dr. Alan Rabinowitz, an American zoologist and CEO of Panthera came and spoke to area students assembled in Beloit Memorial’s auditorium. It’s an exceptional opportunity for our school children to listen to and speak with renown, internationally recognized leaders in the scientific community to what is happening in our world within their particular discipline. Part of the intent is to help spark and encourage student curiosity in the sciences, broaden their awareness and perhaps consider the sciences for further academic pursuit.
Additionally, it affords an uncommon opportunity for attending scientists to speak directly with school children which they will often comment they don’t often have the opportunity to do. It’s something they appreciate. It’s been observed that when they return to their work-a-day lives that they’ll often comment in subsequent presentations, on their social media or elsewhere on their experiences in Beloit and their presenting to our school age children in particular.
Dr. Alan Rabinowitz
This last weekend Dr. Rabinowitz spoke to a capacity crowd of Intermediate and High Schoolers about global “apex” wild cat conservation, the current state of our global ecosystems, the impact big cat conservation has on our environment and future considerations. He clearly had the kids attention. The student audience was quiet and attentive. These presentations are always followed by a time of Q&A for students. What was remarkable was the thoughtfulness in the student’s questions. They were serious, respectful and exhibited a healthy curiosity about the subject and Dr. Rabinowiz experiences. Following the Q&A and student dismissal Dr. Rabinowitz continued to meet and speak with students individually who had additional questions or who simply wanted to meet him and shake his hand. The students behavior was impressive.
Roy Chapman Andrews
This was an amazing opportunity for the kids. Thank you to The Roy Chapman Andrews Society for making student education a key and integral part of your yearly recognition for world-class, scientific exploration and discovery and the scientists who are leading the way in their respective disciplines. This as a means of keeping alive the memory of and appreciation for world famous scientific discoverer, archeologist, adventurer and Beloit native, Roy Chapman Andrews.
And of course, thank you Dr. Rabinowitz for your work. And thank you for sharing your insight and passion with our kids.
