Free Early Childhood Screening

First Step in Obtaining Services

Early and accurate identification of young children who have developmental delays or disorders is key to the timely delivery of early intervention services. A comprehensive, first level screening program is the first step in obtaining needed services for children and their families.

Each month throughout the school year in different locations and at different times to meet varying family schedules, the School District of Beloit and partners hold a free screening to determine eligibility for early childhood services. Parents are asked to call 361-4020 to schedule an appointment though walk-ins will be accepted. The last screening will take place:

May 11, 2016
11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Brother Dutton Building
717 Hackett Street, Beloit

The screening includes an Ages and Stages Questionnaire in addition to vision and tooth checks. Information to enroll in school and Head Start programs is available, and a free gift bag with a children’s book is given to each participant.

For parents unsure if their child may have a developmental delay, here are some developmental milestones to look for:

  • By the age of 18-24 months your child should be able to walk, build a tower of four blocks or more, say 15 words or more, and recognize names of familiar people, objects and body parts.
  • By the age of 24-36 months your child should be able to climb well, turn book pages one at a time, and recognize and identify almost all common objects and pictures.
  • By the age of 3-4 years your child should be able to kick and throw a ball, use scissors, draw circles and squares, speak in sentences of 5-6 words, tell stories, and can correctly name some colors.
  • By the age of 4-5 years your child should be able to swing and climb, print some letters, dress independently, recall parts of a story, count 10 or more objects, wants to please and be with friends, likes to sign, dance and act.

This program is sponsored in part by a Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant. Key partners include: Head Start and the School District of Beloit, with support from Boys & Girls Club, Even Start, and Latino Service Provider Coalition.
