Not Giving Up
Though school was not as easy as Marilyn has made it seem, her early elementary school years were the most difficult for her and her parents. Difficult to the point that she struggled all through middle school. Her father and mother had their own struggle with the English language, and this didn’t help the matter when it came to helping Marilyn with homework. Her father, Jose, was very adamant about their daughter not giving up and looking for ways to learn the subject at hand. Both parents helped as much as they could and stressed the fact that if you work hard at it you will succeed. The main motivation for the family was to be more than a factory worker. Another huge factor was to tear down the stigma of the Latino stereotype persona.
One of Marilyn’s dreams is to help the Latino community. She has been impacted by the political arena she has seen thus far. Being an activist to defend the Latinos human rights is one area she would like to participate in. She would also like to have her own talk show, as much as she would also like to major in Advertising or Law.
The Help of Teachers
As time went on Marilyn turned her grades from “B’s” to “A’s.” She learned at a young age to ask for help and confide in her family. One of her struggles was in 2nd grade, there was a rumor from her peers that the teacher was very bad, this actually traumatized Marilyn by not being able to learn. During conferences her parents addressed the issue with the teacher and of course none of this was true. The teacher and Marilyn became study partners and Marilyn was able to cross this barrier.
Along the course of her years in school, her teachers at Gaston were also very instrumental in her success. One especially was Ms. Harris, she would work with Marilyn after school. Marilyn is so thankful for all of her teachers and tutors she had throughout her time in school.
Recommendation for Other Parents
Planning was an important strategy in the Anaya household. Both parents can successfully say, consistency towards a goal was achieved, and both daughters earned a full scholarship
Jose and Maria would say to any parent the following, “Motivate them constantly and never give up on them.” One of their recommendations is to enroll your student in the Help Yourself program. This program was a God send!
This program was very influential in the lives of their 2 daughters. The program helped them with school work, tutors twice a week and other activities for the students to be active. When they had enrolled the girls there was a huge number of minorities, but when they completed the program, the number dropped to only two Latinos. Yes, only the girls were left. Needless to say they also wanted to give up but their mother, Maria, would not have it. She would take them regardless of their mood. Both parents insisted they stay with the program.
There also was another program called Upward Bound, also offered through Beloit College and federally funded, the Help Yourself is funded with donations. Both programs were effective in the lives of Marilyn and her sister Emily; through these programs they were able to visit places they would never have gone otherwise. Like summer camps, and traveling to Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota and Chicago. Through the Upward Bound program they were able to visit other colleges and go to Washington, D.C., and New York, for a week at a time. As they got older the program then veered towards helping them find scholarships and the paper work that’s entailed with FAFSA. This was a crucial time for their daughters.
Resulting Opportunities
Marilyn was offered a four-year full scholarship because of her academic grades and all the effort her family and these programs offered. Marilyn had the opportunity to choose from the following locations on a full scholarship, Oakland, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles. Marilyn chose Mt. St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles, an all girls’ school, on a full scholarship.

No Rendirse
