We’ve invited two outstanding high school jazz bands to join our own Beloit Memorial Jazz Orchestra for an amazing evening of award winning High School Jazz Band performances. We’ll have dancing, amazing food and refreshments by local barbecue legend Otha Williams.

The Milwaukee HS of the Arts Jazz Lab combo began as part of an improvisation class with five students in 1985. It has blossomed into a group that is recognized nationwide. In addition to this year’s performance at the WMEA convention, Lab performed at the JEN national convention in Dallas, and will be backing up the MHSA vocal jazz ensemble at the Midwest choral directors’ convention in Iowa this coming March. Other notable past performances have included:

- The UW Stevens Point Jazz Festival
- The UW Plateville Jazz Festival
- The IAJE National Convention
- The North Sea Jazz Festival
- The Berklee HS Jazz competition

About Grow Your Own
The Beloit Grow Your Own Multicultural Scholarship Initiative provides scholarships for School District of Beloit students of color to pursue degrees in education in exchange for those students making the commitment to come back to teach in Beloit Schools.
