Our Family
Lynn says she has embraced the idea: “Prepare your child for the road, not the road for your child.”
“Life has twists and turns,” she said. “Knowing your resources, trusting your skill, having knowledge and understanding your limitations all make the journey easier. I believe BMHS staff have supported me in preparing Austin with that understanding for the future — there is not room for excuses, only for improvement.”
And how did Austin – following in the footsteps of two older sisters who graduated from BMHS – arrive at this place?
Noting that Austin, as did his sisters, joined the School District of Beloit for high school, Lynn said, “…Being residents of the city, we did not exercise the use of the public education system until high school. Certainly, there were considerations regarding open enrollment for high school. After careful consideration with my oldest child, Beloit School District was our commitment.”
Continuing, she said, “I have never looked back to the day that decision was made. Austin is the last of my three children to experience an excellent education at Beloit Memorial High School.
Our Experience
“My theory in life is not perfect. How you respond to life makes all the difference in your experience. The same applies to your child’s education. I have found that working with the staff and administration has been solid. There are always open doors: face-to-face conversations, email communication and phone access (even personal phone numbers in many cases). Working through challenges, celebrating successes, planning for future goals or surviving the challenges of our lives and schedules, the staff and administration have been available.”
When asked more about BMHS academics as a whole, Lynn said, “Certainly, we could discuss the variety of classes and challenge levels that are offered at BMHS — which are many. Our experience has allowed the exposure to various teaching styles, from highly structured to self-directed, all of which provide the opportunity to understand the diversity of interaction students will have with others in the adult community. That has allowed for expansion of personal development — and coping strategies — to be successful. Austin has had the opportunity to have very talented teachers make an impact on him from various departments: science, business, language, English, math, physical education, academic guidance — significant relationships, advice, experience that will be a part of his journey throughout life.
A little more specifically, Lynn said, “BMHS has provided the opportunity for a variety of classroom subjects. This is an important part of learning about yourself and your interests. This is a benefit that Austin took advantage of. He has experienced a variety of classes to help him make a decision for his future. He has also had the benefit of an experienced academic guidance counselor to support him as he explored, prepared for and followed through his choices.”
Extracurriculars
On extracurriculars, Lynn said, “In Austin’s case this has been important. He is a talented athlete and the coaching staff he has been honored to work with has taught him the importance of being a student, athlete, and leader. These lessons cannot be taught in the classroom. They are experiences on the field, in the locker room, at practice and in the community. They are built in the moment and make a lasting impact — learning how to make a mistake, learn from it and change the future. Learning how to make a decision –for the right reasons — and follow through.
“Austin has also learned how to transfer those skills to the various clubs that are available at BMHS. These clubs have also supported the understanding of community and how to ‘walk the talk’ #BeloitProud.
“These experiences could not be available without the passionate, dedicated teachers from the Beloit School District that take on the responsibility of the sports and clubs.”
Younger Parents
On words of wisdom for families in the future, Lynn said, “As parents, know this is a community and partnership. Participate. You will meet other parents. Show the children — including yours — that you are invested. Provide motivation to the staff to continue the excellence. And discover something new about yourself. There are many opportunities: parent-teacher conferences, open house nights, orientation events, booster clubs, spectatorship, special interest meetings. Take a journey out of your comfort zone.”
