(English version following below)

Interview with a proud mother

Maria, tell us a little about your son Paco’s school experience.
He has achieved our goals regarding his studies as he was able to get the scholarship he was hoping for. I am very happy and satisfied with his accomplishments. In 2009 when he was in 7th grade it was very difficult for him to get involved in sports. Mostly he tried participating in private clubs but also clubs formed by people in the community. As I didn’t fully know what opportunities were available here in Beloit I had to work to get help and find places where he could participate. After some time looking I found that he could participate on the local soccer team at McNeel Intermediate School. He always enjoyed being on the soccer team there and played until he got to Beloit Memorial. Paco also did a great job in Track. He participated his last three years on the BMHS track team and was able to place 6th in his event competing at State.  In Soccer, as we know the team was able to make it all the way to the State Semi-finals.

Paco has always been a very diligent student in his school work and other tasks he has been involved in. In fact, he did not like to miss school even when he was sick . His teachers always had positive comments. In 5th grade a teacher told me that Paco would go far if he put his mind to it and one day we’ll be hearing about his accomplishments. He never had any negative reports or things brought to my attention. At the parent-teacher conferences he always had good reviews. These conferences tended to be short as there was basically nothing to discuss, things were going well.

With The Help Of Friends

One of the biggest obstacles we have had to work though has been transportation. I do not feel comfortable driving to distant places. So when Paco had competitions outside the Beloit community it was always very difficult for me. When possible I was able to attend with help of friends.

Language has also been a barrier for me in order to help him cope with tasks and all kinds of circumstances that he has faced. As the oldest brother he always helped his younger brothers in their tasks. Additionally, he has served as my interpreter in many situations (doctor, schools, shops, etc.) I now understand a little English and have learned to communicate somewhat though I would like to improve on this.

With The Help Of Teachers

I believe it is very important for children early on to establish goals to enable them to excel and to graduate. Like any parent who wants more for her children, as much as I want my child to do well I recognize that if my child does not want to do well himself there is little that I can do. These are their personal decisions. We can only support them in the decision they have chosen. I have been very lucky with the decisions Paco has made and in his achievements. I still have four more children who likewise hope to graduate. I will always be there watching to help and to guide them in their needs.

I would like to mention the wonderful support by his soccer Coach Mr. Brian Denu. He has provided huge support in helping us through holding the soccer camps and with uniforms or equipment when needed. He also helped us with the necessary paperwork to enroll in school and everything related to school. Paco has always been able to count on Mr. Denu.
