Beloit Schools Receive Awards From State

The Wisconsin Department of Public Education (DPI) has awarded Hackett, Todd and McNeel Schools through its Wisconsin PBIS Network, with Todd receiving additional recognition through DPI’s Wisconsin RtI Center.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Three schools have received recognition for their work in using strategies in PBIS, including a School of Distinction and two Schools of Merit.

McNeel Intermediate School and Todd Elementary School both received School of Merit awards for implementing PBIS and meeting the following criteria:

• Implementing critical elements of tier 1/universal (all students) PBIS with commitment (as measured by the Benchmarks of Quality)
• Using behavioral data within a problem solving framework in order to improve the outcomes of students
• Regularly using PBIS self-assessment tools to drive implementation efforts

Hackett Elementary School is one of fewer than 140 schools across the state to have achieved School of Distinction status, meeting not only School of Merit implementation criteria, but also sustaining such efforts according to the following benchmarks:

• Sustaining committed implementation of critical elements of tier 1/universal PBIS (as demonstrated by a minimum of two consecutive years of Benchmarks of Quality results)
• Demonstrating that their sustained implementation has had positive effects on their academic and/or behavioral data
• Implementing PBIS throughout the school environment, including classrooms
• Involving parents and the community to ensure the continued success of PBIS implementation in the school
• Examining data to ensure that the tier 1/universal system is effective for all groups of students

Response to Intervention (RtI)

Along with being one of three Beloit schools recognized for behavioral program awards, Todd Elementary School was also named a School of Distinction by the Wisconsin RtI Center, recognizing staff efforts in creating environments that allow for academic achievements for all students.

The Schools of Distinction and Merit programs recognize schools that have made achievements in enacting RtI frameworks for academics (mathematics and reading). All Wisconsin schools are eligible to apply for any of the awards. Only 19 schools across the state received Academic Distinction honors, while 48 schools earned Academic Merit honors.

Wisconsin RtI Center Schools of Distinction show the following characteristics:

• Have participated in the Wisconsin RtI Center Foundational Overview training
• Achieve a high score on the School-Wide Implementation Review (SIR) during the current school year, showing a fully implemented multi-level system of support
• Have school leadership teams that meet regularly
• Have active RtI coordination
• Actively use data about the school and the individual students to action plan and guide implementation
• Actively use data for team-based decision making and problem solving at both the systems and student level
• Have self-assessed at full implementation (80-100%) on the School-wide Implementation Review (SIR) for two consecutive years
• Have at least two years of disaggregated screening data by race and disability.
