People Make The Difference
A mathematics teacher at BMHS, Deb says she knows from her perspective what a great education constitutes – expertise and dedication on the part of instructors and administrators who care deeply about their students. And that is precisely what she believes Jackson found here.
“It’s the people who make the difference,” Deb continues, “and it has always been clear to us that educators keep students in their hearts. And Beloit educators take that up a notch.
“Having spent his school life in Beloit,” she explains, “We think Jackson’s successes speak to the quality of the staff he experienced throughout his years, from his elementary teachers who recognized his abilities and nurtured his interests, through Beloit Memorial High School, where the wide variety of courses and opportunity to pursue AP college credits helped him stay motivated and achieve scholarly goals.
More Than Ready for Continued Education
“He has especially enjoyed AP Government and Politics with Mr. Hoey, Accounting and Advanced Accounting with Mrs. Richardson, and Strength and Conditioning with Mr. Gillette. In addition to earning college credit through several AP courses, Jackson has also earned college credit through his Introduction to Public Speaking course that is offered in conjunction with UW-Rock County.
Pointing out that BMHS teachers continually inspire students to pursue new directions, Deb adds, “It was this year that Jackson discovered his talent and interest in business and accounting with the help of Mrs. Richardson.”
“Because of the strong academic foundation Jackson has experienced at BMHS, we know that he is more than ready to continue his education at UW-LaCrosse next fall.
Encourage Your Child To…
On additional reflection, Deb says, “We believe BMHS has provided Jackson a big stage that reflects the world he and other students are entering in 2017. BMHS is the kind of facility that provides students a wide range of opportunities and experiences. Jackson has been a member of the National Honor Society, the Men’s Volleyball team and the Men’s Varsity Swim team. He has taken full advantage of the Varsity swim program. The coaches in this program, Mr. Vogel, Mrs. Waite, Mr. Michels and Mr. DeKok emphasize the importance of excellence in the classroom as well as the pool. In fact, both the men’s and women’s teams have earned national recognition for the academic success of its athletes.
Further, Deb says, “Jackson earned his lifeguard certification in Coach Vogel’s Lifeguarding course, which has led to employment and volunteer work. The new BMHS pool helped open doors for him and his teammates to achieve many successes at the local and state level in the past four years and has helped prepare Jackson to pursue college athletics.”
As the family looks toward Jackson’s graduation and all that is ahead, Deb says, “We have a daughter who will be starting at the high school next fall.” Then, she emphasizes, “For other parents of students just entering high school, encourage your child to take a variety of courses and challenge them to do their best in each. Encourage your child to seek help when they struggle in a class. The teachers and staff are there and willing to help. Ask your child to find a group, club or sport to join and support their efforts in those activities. BMHS has much to offer, but you must be willing to grab on, take hold and be an active participant in the adventure.”
