Gifted and Talented Program
As Anthony’s father James began, speaking of his wife, “Angie has basically lived in the Beloit School District area her entire life. Her grandmother went to Cunningham. Her mother went to Gaston. And she went to Gaston.”
Of himself, James said, “I have lived all over the country, but I did attend Beloit schools, McNeel and BMHS, for multiple grades.”
Concerning Anthony, James and Angie agreed, “The gifted and talented program has been very helpful in challenging Anthony to help him see what he is capable of doing and to help push him so that he continually grows.”
Further, they said, to name names of people important to Anthony’s academic success, “In terms of Anthony, we have had multiple teachers that have been extremely helpful over the years. They are, but not limited to: Mrs. Combs, Mr. Warblow, Ms. Gentry, Mrs. Perez, Mrs. Prowse, Mr. McClelland, Mr. De-kok, Mr. Michaels (business deparment). For administration, the following have been extremely helpful: Mrs. Champion, Mrs. Jacobs.”
Preparation for Life after High School
Mentioning their son’s favorite courses at BMHS, James and Angie added, “Physics, Calculus, Orchestra.” And very specifically, “Math, Science, and Orchestra are Anthony’s strongest and favorite subjects.”
Lastly but not least on academics, they said, “The AP classes that the high school provided will be a great benefit in his college career. Additionally, Porter Scholar and Youth Options provided him with some great opportunities to enrich his high school career while giving him a leg up on starting his college career.
On extracurriculars, they pinpoint as beneficial for their son and as possibilities all parents may want to encourage: “FBLA, Tennis, NHS.” All three played a significant and memorable part of their son’s high school experience.
Advocating for your child
Overall, James and Angie said, regarding their son, “His high school career has helped him learn many positive things towards becoming an upstanding adult.”
As they look forward to the conclusion of Anthony’s time in the school district and him joining their status as alums, they said, “We have found that no matter what, you have to be your child’s advocate and push to ensure that they get the education that they not only need but deserve. At times, it may seem daunting, but, in the end, it is the best thing for them and down the road for the community. You cannot sit back and hope others will do what needs to be done. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that it gets done.”
