Out of 14 names submitted to UAA for the award, Carpenter’s support via Facebook helped her earn a spot in the top 3 finalists. At this point, she was asked to submit her body of work, in which she included a letter of recommendation from Dr. Tom Johnson, Superintendent of the School District of Beloit.
The 2016 JAC awards consisted of 19 categories, with each category being sponsored by a local business. The Outstanding Fine Arts Educator award was sponsored by Voigt Music Store. The two other finalists were from elementary schools in Janesville.
Carpenter has taught in the School District of Beloit for 11 years, with the past 4 years serving at Beloit Memorial High School. She currently teaches Basic 2D and 3D Design, Sculpture, Ceramics, Community Art Appreciation, Advanced Placement 2D Design, Advanced Placement 3D Design, and Advanced Placement Drawing.
While she teaches many classes within the high school building, her favorite part of teaching is when she and the students take their art out of the classroom. Some of the projects they have done together include making giant parade puppet heads for homecoming, and creating paper dresses and wigs for a Becca’s Closet fundraiser (a program that gives donated formalwear to students who cannot otherwise afford prom or homecoming). Carpenter also enjoys the chance to have her students recognized in area art shows and local competitions, as well as taking them on field trips to Beloit College, Chicago or London and Paris. She notes, “I love anything that breaks the box of the classroom. The students love it too!”
