And she should know.
“Caroline is our second daughter who has attended Beloit Memorial High School, and we have had nothing but positive experiences — again — with the Beloit School District,” Shelley says, noting that she and husband Jim saw their oldest daughter Maggy graduate in 2014.
“When we reflect on Caroline’s high school experience, it brings to mind all the opportunities she has had at BMHS.
“Caroline has taken many AP courses where she has not only earned college credit, but also cultivated the discipline and study habits required to succeed at advanced – college — level course work,” Shelley explains. “One glance at the BMHS course catalog shows that there is something for everyone, with classes designed for every student to succeed in life and whatever future career or college path they may be interested in pursuing.
Getting Involved
“We have always encouraged Caroline to be involved, work hard and take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way. …She has participated in swim all four years, been active in clubs doing community service, all the while developing leadership skills. BMHS provides countless opportunities, students just need to take advantage of them.
“I know all the different experiences Caroline has had while attending BMHS has prepared her well for college next year. There is no doubt in our mind about where we will be sending our son to high school, and we are excited for him to be starting at BMHS next year.
Staff & AP
“Just as important as the many academic and extracurricular offerings at BMHS is their incredible staff that make it all possible. We can’t say enough about the teaching and coaching staff Caroline has had.
“The teachers really get to know the students, and they care and want them to succeed. They also make themselves available to their students. There were many mornings when Caroline and other students went in early or spent their lunch hour working on Calculus with Mrs. Prowse in her classroom. In AP English, Ms. Witkins prepared her own AP practice test for her students, which she administered on her own time on a Sunday afternoon, to make sure her students were ready for the AP exam. Class bonfires were held at Mr. Studeman’s home to help prep the APUSH (AP U.S. History) students before testing. My daughter loves history, and the teachers she has had in the social studies department — Mr. Quamme, Mr. Elliot, Mr. Studeman and Mr. Flynn — were exceptional, going beyond teaching the material by engaging the students to think critically.

Conversations At Home
Continuing Shelley says, “I have always enjoyed evening conversations with my kids, and I love asking about their day. Some of the best conversations with my daughter Caroline start with, ‘Hey mom, did you know…,’ and very often Caroline will bring up an idea or topic discussed in class. I hope the teachers at BMHS realize the positive impact they are having on developing critical thinking through class discussions.
In much the same way, Shelley adds, “The BMHS swim coaching staff of Mr. Vogel, Mrs. Waite and Mr. Michaels have taught my daughter way, way more than the sport of swimming. Students involved in swim learn the importance of teamwork and the mastery of time management. Caroline will utilize these lessons learned in swim throughout life in relationships, group activities and in future employment situations.”
So it should not be surprising that the Locke’s are looking forward to Caroline’s younger brother Matthew being a BMHS student and swimmer in the years ahead as they continue as a Beloit PROUD family.
