Scholar Dollars
These are given to donors whenever they contribute to the Grow Your Own fund. Scholar Dollars are given to those who donate in increments of one, five, ten, 20, 50, and 100 dollars. While these slips of paper have no purchasing power for a candy bar or a carwash, they do have the power to put a vision into action: to increase the number of minorities who teach in the School District of Beloit so that every student can grow up seeing and knowing at least one teacher who looks like him or her.
Grow Your Own Scholarship Program
A Strong Start
Already, the staff of the Beloit school system has raised 44K towards this fund, with the goal set at raising 50K by June 7. Beginning in October students at the high school were themselves able to donate, and each dollar they contributed could be exchanged for a raffle ticket and a scholar dollar. Assistant superintendent Dr. Darrell Williams decided to “sweeten the pot a little bit” for students by offering a pair of diamond earrings to be raffled off on October 28. The raffle tickets were on sale outside the cafeteria for students during all lunches through late October.
